Perspectives on Legionnaires' Disease in relation to acute nickel carbonyl poisoning. The Henry M. Scharf Lecture on current affairs.

چکیده
The original title given to this pre sentation was “Acute Nickel Carbonyl Poisoning as a Simulator of Viral Pneumonia.” An attempt was made to avoid the use of the term “Legionnaires’ Disease” since the illness was of limited scope and refers solely to one outbreak affecting merely a fraction of one percent of legionnaires living in Pennsylvania who attended the 1976 Legionnaires’ convention in Philadelphia. Despite our feelings in the matter, the term “Legion naires’ Disease” has recently attained such common usage that for a discourse on current affairs, the original title has been changed,—albeit with reluctance. Legionnaires’ Disease has been de scribed as the “medical story of the cen tury.” The public interest in it has led to a congressional investigation,—allegedly the first congressional inquiry into the cause of any disease. The disease has re ceived international news coverage. In fact, during conferences in Europe last fall, there was no difficulty in keeping in formed on the subject by reading the arti cles on Legionnaires’ Disease in the

Use of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate in the treatment of nickel carbonyl poisoning.
This presentation is primarily concerned with the use of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (Dithiocarb) in the treatment of acute nickel carbonyl poisoning. Reference will be made to earlier studies pertaining to diagnosis in relation to treatment. In addition, recent studies will be briefly considered on the administration of Dithiocarb to rats developing tumors following the muscular implantation...
متن کاملEfficacy of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (dithiocarb) in acute nickel carbonyl poisoning.
A brief historical resume is presented on the use of dithiocarbamates for the treatment of persons exposed to nickel carbonyl. The specificity of the treatment is demonstrated in an industrial accident in which four men were simultaneously exposed to nickel carbonyl vapors. Three of the men received dithiocarb within 24 hours after exposure and the fourth was hospitalized by his family physicia...
متن کاملThe effect of 2-3 dimercapto-propanol (BAL) on experimental nickel carbonyl poisoning.
The experiments recorded in this paper were designed to investigate the effects of the inhalation of nickel carbonyl by rats and rabbits, and to study in detail the distribution of nickel in the body, the development of pathological lesions, and the influence of the therapeutic agent 2-3 dimercaptopropanol (BAL) on these changes. The study was made because occasional cases of accidental poisoni...
متن کاملChelation therapy in nickel poisoning.
For the treatment of acute poisoning from the inhalation of nickel carbonyl, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (Dithiocarb) has proved to be a specific antidote; tetraethylthiuram (Antabuse) is effective to a lesser degree; d-penicillamine and dimercaprol (BAL) have limited therapeutic value. For the treatment of nickel eczema and dermatitis, favorable response has been obtained by placing patients...
